Mapping the flow of international students around the world

Mapping the flow of international students

6 million international students make up thousands of discrete flows from their home country to their study destination. GSF pioneered the Global Student Flows map below in 2018, allowing governments, universities, institutions and firms around the world for the first time to see the beauty and complexity of global student flows in one map. Setting strategy, policy and allocating resources to support the growth of international education demands an advanced understanding of many global factors captured in the Open Source Framework.

The Interactive GSF Map below captures the top 20 study destinations pre-pandemic on the left hand side of the map in light grey. The right hand side of the map shows the major source regions where students are travelling from. By hovering over the source and destination markets on the interactive map, you can trace the global student flows and gain a deeper understanding of the dynamics of the global market.

The GSF Map will be updated late 2023 following major destination market deep dives to provide a more complete interactive picture of the state of Global Student Flows.
